Germany
Germany's mobile market is served by Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile DE), Vodafone Germany, and Telefónica Germany (O2). Deutsche Telekom operates the most extensive network with the broadest rural coverage. 5G is available in major cities with both NSA and SA deployments. Key frequency bands: 700 MHz (4G rural), 1800/2100 MHz (4G urban), 3.5 GHz (5G).
France
France has four MNOs: Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom, and Free Mobile. Orange has the most extensive rural coverage. 5G is available in major cities. The French regulatory authority (ARCEP) publishes detailed coverage data. Key consideration: Free Mobile has excellent pricing but more limited rural coverage.
Spain
Spain's market features Movistar (Telefónica), Vodafone Spain, Orange Spain, and MásMóvil. Movistar has the most comprehensive coverage including islands. 5G is available in major cities. The Balearic and Canary Islands are served but may have different roaming dynamics than mainland Spain.
Italy
TIM (Telecom Italia), Vodafone Italy, WindTre, and Iliad serve Italy. TIM has the most extensive coverage including rural areas. 5G is available in major cities. Alpine and Apennine mountain regions present coverage challenges. Sicily and Sardinia are well-served in populated areas.
Netherlands
KPN, Vodafone Netherlands, and T-Mobile Netherlands provide near-complete national coverage. The Netherlands has one of the highest 5G penetration rates in Europe. Flat terrain and high population density make it one of the easiest countries for connectivity planning. eSIM adoption is high.
Belgium
Proximus, Orange Belgium, and Telenet serve Belgium. Proximus has the most extensive coverage. Brussels and major cities have excellent 4G/5G coverage. Belgium's compact size means most of the country is well-served, though the Ardennes region has some coverage gaps.
Austria
A1 Telekom, Magenta, and Drei serve Austria. Alpine terrain creates significant coverage challenges in mountain valleys. Vienna and major cities have excellent coverage.
Czech Republic
T-Mobile CZ, O2 CZ, and Vodafone CZ provide strong urban coverage. Prague has excellent 4G/5G. Rural Bohemia and Moravia have improved but remain variable.
Poland
Orange, Play, Plus, and T-Mobile serve Poland. Warsaw and major cities have excellent coverage. Rural eastern Poland can be more variable. 5G expanding in urban areas.
Portugal
MEO, NOS, and Vodafone Portugal serve mainland and islands. Lisbon and Porto have excellent coverage. Algarve is well-served. Interior regions more variable.
Border Crossing Technical Notes
When crossing between EU member states, eSIM plans with European coverage automatically switch to available networks. The handover process depends on the provider's network steering configuration. Some providers use "preferred network" lists that may result in connecting to a secondary network rather than the strongest available signal. Travelers can manually select networks in device settings if automatic selection produces suboptimal results.
